Research journal 3

Article 1
Cimiotti, J. P., Aiken, L. H., Sloane, D. M., & Wu, E. S. (2012). Nurse staffing, burnout, and health care-associated infection. American Journal of Infection Control, 40(6), 486.

This would be considered a primary source it was a study that was conducted in several hospitals. This study was conducted so other factors were mentioned but burnout also played a key role in patient outcomes.

This article is relevant to my research because this relates burnout rates with patient outcomes and the relationship between infection rate during their stays. So not only are the nurses feeling the effect of the

How will this aid my research topic when it comes to presenting it is that I will be able to use the statistics provided in this study and the fact that there is a clear coronation between infection and Burnout is good on preventing infection and improving patient outcomes but also on how it impacts the overall costs of a patients care.

Effects of burnout can include hygiene lapses and medical errors due to External demands associated with burnout. This can help me in emphasizing my topic on how we can perhaps improve these conditions.

Article # 2
Melvin, C. S. (2015). Historical review in understanding burnout, professional compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress disorder from a hospice and palliative nursing perspective. Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing, 17(1), 66-72.

This is relevant because my topic is on Nurses and I want it to emphasize nurses that ate responsible for patients who are very sick and who need palliative care.

What kind of source this is a secondary source because it really doesn’t include that much information on an actual study more on the research done on the topic and experiences not so much on actual data I want to present on how “Burn out” leads to unwanted patient outcomes.

What I found interesting about this topic is that this article included recommendations to prevent burnout. This was interesting to me because a lot of the research I have been finding found the sources of burnout but really did not recommend much on what to do to prevent work conditions just that there were the actual issues and this article goes deep into it. Another interesting point I  in this journal article is that in the beginning it goes ahead what Burnout is and when the term originated. How this may work for me is that when I am perhaps presenting this to my peer’s I can use this to define what burn out is instead of just me assuming everyone is on the same page.

Article 3
Wu, S., Zhu, W., Wang, Z., Wang, M., & Lan, Y. (2007). Relationship between burnout and occupational stress among nurses in china. Journal of Advanced Nursing,

The kind of research this article is that it is A primary source from which I will use to compare to the first article by Melvin C..The relevance of this article would be that in reading this article the topic of “Occupational Stress” kept popping up in each article so far. In this article it mentions coping resources as an important prevention to burn out. Which I thought was interesting when it came to comparing the nurses who actually used and didn’t use the resources and the effects..

Week 3 older and wiser

Talked to an old co worker.
 I told her:
Topic what are the causes of burn out and what can we do to prevent them in order to provide better care for patients.

Reasoning behind it:
personal experience and witnessing burnout in a couple of coworkers.
i questioned why were only some experiencing the symptoms and others were not.
then i told her what are employers doing in order to prevent this sort of situations
the Key terms were. "low job Control", "burn out", "palliative care", "prevention",  and "support"
what was at stake why do I belive this topic is one that i need to do.
Can preventing this minimize work related illness or injury?
work productivity

I definitely need to work on the little kinks but i am getting closer to solidly finding a well defined topic.

possible articles to look into...

Just so I Don't loose these article titles:

Associations of financial strain and income with depressive and anxiety disorders.     Dijkstra-Kersten

Work Safety Climate, Musculoskeletal Discomfort, Working While Injured, and Depression Among Migrant Farmworkers in North Carolina     Thomas A. Arcury

The Impact of Changes in Job Strain and Its Components on the Risk of Depression.Peter M. Smith

Journal 1

Research Journal# 1

1.)    What was the process by which you narrowed down potential topics to two appropriate ones? And how were these decisions made on the basis of wither class discussion, or our required, course textbook (Aveyard 2014), or both?
  • ·                 I mainly used the course textbook Aveyard 2014 mainly because I had missed class time.

2.)    What research question did you choose, and how can I be sure you’re making a reasoned, academic judgement on the basis of chapters 1-3 (Aveyard 2014)?
  • ·         The research question I chose was: How do work conditions effect workers when it comes to mental illness associated with depression

3.)    What article (or articles) are you basing the question on, and what type of article is it (research, theory, policy, practice) (citation[s] in APA, please)?
  • ·         Okechukwu, Cassandra A,ScD, El Ayadi, Alison M, Tamers, Sara L, Sabbath, E. L, & Berkman (2012). Household food insufficiency, financial strain, work-family spillover, and depressive symptoms in the working class: The work, family, and health network study. American Journal of Public Health 126-33

4.)    How can I be sure that the key vocabulary of the question corresponds not only to literature in the field, but also to chapter 1-3 (Aveyard 2014)?
  • ·         I have to see when the literature was published is one of the main thing I have to look out for. With my previous topic I was about to choose something based off of a peer reviewed article that was published twenty two years ago. Even though it may be from a peer review journal the information is or can be very outdated. Another would be to make sure information is from a peer reviewed journal.

5.)    Based on what your question is what kind of literature are you going to need? Again, please explicitly reference the text (Aveyard 2014). What is your hierarchy of evidence?
  • 1.      Surveys
  • 2.      Longitudinal studies
  • 3.      Expert opinions
  • 4.      As well as quantitative and qualitative studies of workers who may or maynot be experiencing symptoms of depression.

6.)    How do you define your key terms, and how do these definitions link to key journals in the field?
·         The main way or method I have to define my key terms is mainly by reading the abstract and listing what the possible key terms would be
o   Depression
o   Work related accidents
o   Family income
o   Family
o   Food insufficiency
7.)    Did anything unexpected happen? From your initial search, does it appear as though your research question will work? Or does the vocabulary and/or type of research sought need to be changed?

  • ·         So far unexpected things did happen from the original topic I had chosen. The original topic I had wanted to do really wouldn’t lead me anywhere so far my research question does appear like it will work. The way I am researching does need to be changed.

Re evaluating my choice for a research topic

Reasons why I am choosing to changing my topic.

First when I originally did the assignment I choose a topic last minute and did not really think about it to much. Now as we progress further int the assignment I have realized that the topic I choose really isn't something I can work with. So as a result I have to back track and think of what other topic can I work with.

I narrowed it down to three major topics and issues that are more workable:

  1. The health reform
  2. Mental Health
  3. environmental factors
choice one 1. The Health Reform
  • The possible opposition and the repercussions of a repeal of the current healthcare reform
  • There seems to be no emphasis on prevention and a higher emphasis on treatment when it comes to chronic illnesses, how has the health reform impacted this.

Choice 2. Mental Health
  • There is still a negative stigma when it comes to mental illnesses.
  • since the health reform has made it so insurance companies cant deny you coverage to pre-existing conditions affect treatment to mental health conditions.
 Choice 3. Environmental health.
  • the safety of water. whether or not it is safe to consume or use.
  • The community how does it  affect individuals health when it comes to the community they are in.
  • Radon testing in homes <---(as an example) and how that benefits the community. so how do these sort of resources benefit individual communities.

Possible questions/topics
How has technology impacted the prevalence and prevention of chronic diseases like Hypertension and diabetes

how does the current immigration reform affect people like muslims and mexicans and their overall mental health.

How do work conditions effect workers when it comes to mental illness associated with depression

What was highlighted were the two that would seem to work

Choosing a topic

I decided the topic I am going to work with is Vaccinations and public health. The Reason why I decided to choose this topic is that it affects local communities. As a Future Community health  leader  my first focus would be within the community.  which is the first article I choose (aricle on the top )
